A good quote

Just have to note this, if for no one else but myself:

A prime test of an historian’s skill is the extent to which he does justice to these complementary forces, repetition and novelty.

I'm becoming less shocked by your conservative tendencies Elaine.

Kimball has a great book on how contemporary art historians have ruined most works of art by submitting them to a kind of artistic 'deconstruction.'

In case you want more New Criterion goodness, check out this review of their new culture anthology: http://pajamasmedia.com/2007/05/maumauing_the_multiculturalist.php
